Safe Spaces Matter: Your Weekly Update on Domestic Violence Housing Assistance

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we believe that everyone deserves a place where they can breathe easy, sleep soundly, and feel completely secure. For many women in our community, that sense of safety has been stripped away by domestic violence. This week, we’re diving deep into why domestic violence housing assistance is more than just a roof over your head, it’s the first step toward reclaiming your life, your dignity, and your future.

If you’ve ever felt like the world was closing in on you, or if you’ve been told that you don't have what it takes to make it on your own, we’re here to prove those voices wrong. You are resilient, you are capable, and most importantly, you are not alone.

Why "Safe Spaces" Are the Foundation of Healing

When we talk about a "safe space," we aren't just talking about four walls and a door that locks. According to recent community-based research, a true safe space is a sanctuary that offers confidentiality, support, and a direct connection to resources. It’s a place where survivors can access temporary accommodation while figuring out their next move without the fear of being found or judged.

At Pelagie Foundation, our mission is to create these environments for underrepresented groups, especially women facing the unimaginable stress of domestic violence. We know that the transition from a crisis situation to a stable life isn't a straight line. It requires a holistic approach that addresses physical safety, emotional wellbeing, and long-term stability.

Finding Your Sanctuary: Domestic Violence Shelter for Women

The search for a domestic violence shelter for women often happens in a moment of extreme urgency. We understand that the barriers to finding help can feel insurmountable, especially when you’re dealing with financial constraints or a lack of support systems.

Our housing programs are designed to break those barriers. We don't just offer a bed; we offer a community. By choosing to work with us, you’re choosing a partner that values your privacy and your journey. Our domestic violence housing assistance is built on the belief that housing is a human right, and safety is the prerequisite for everything else.

A serene living space representing safe domestic violence housing assistance and a fresh start.

More Than a House: The Magic of Salon Therapy

One of the most unique ways we support our residents is through salon therapy. You might wonder, "How does a haircut or a manicure help someone fleeing domestic violence?" The answer is simple: empowerment.

For many survivors, personal care and self-image are some of the first things lost in an abusive environment. Perpetrators often use control over a person's appearance as a tool of isolation. Our salon therapy sessions are about reclaiming that power. It’s a space where you can be pampered, heard, and reminded of your inherent beauty and worth.

Validation: You are seen and appreciated.
Confidence: Looking good helps you feel prepared to take on the world.
Community: It’s a relaxed environment to talk and connect with others who understand.

We’ve seen firsthand how a simple session in the chair can transform a person's outlook, giving them the emotional boost needed to attend a job interview or a legal appointment. It’s not just "beauty", it’s a form of advocacy for yourself.

Healing the Whole Self: Primary Care Behavioral Health

Living in a state of high alert takes a toll on the body and the mind. That’s why Pelagie Foundation integrates primary care behavioral health into our supportive housing models. We don’t expect you to "just get over" what happened.

Trauma-informed care means understanding that your physical health and your mental health are deeply connected. Our team works to provide accessible, affordable care that helps you process the past while building a healthy future. Whether it’s managing the physical symptoms of stress or talking through the complex emotions of starting over, we are here to support your mental wellness every step of the way.

Supporting All Who Seek Safety: Veterans and Seniors

While this week’s focus is heavily on domestic violence assistance, our commitment to "safe spaces" extends to all marginalized communities.

    • Veteran Transitional Housing: Our heroes shouldn't have to fight for a place to live when they return home. We provide dedicated veteran transitional housing to help those who served our country find their footing in civilian life.
    • Senior Housing Assistance: Our elders deserve to age with dignity and security. Our senior housing assistance programs ensure that older adults in our community have access to affordable, supportive environments where they are respected and cared for.

We believe in an ecosystem of support. By serving veterans, seniors, and women, we are building a stronger, more inclusive community where no one is left behind.

    Proving the Narrative Wrong

If you have ever been told that you are "too far gone" or that your situation is "too complicated" for help, Pelagie Foundation is here to prove otherwise. We specialize in the "complicated." We thrive on helping those who have been overlooked by traditional systems.

Our services are acts of advocacy. When we help you secure housing, we are advocating for your right to peace. When we provide primary care behavioral health, we are advocating for your right to heal.

    Our Quantifiable Impact & Commitment:

    • ✓ Focus on BIPOC and underserved communities
    • ✓ Holistic support including Salon Therapy
    • ✓ Integrated health and housing services
    • ✓ Affordable and budget-friendly options for all

  • Domestic Violence Housing Assistance Matters: How We’re Creating Safe Spaces This Week

Domestic Violence Housing Assistance Matters: How We’re Creating Safe Spaces This Week

We believe safe housing is a right, not a reward

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, our mission is simple: we advocate for underserved communities, including women facing domestic violence, veterans, seniors, BIPOC families, immigrants, and anyone who’s ever been made to feel like support “isn’t for them.”

If you’ve ever been told to “just figure it out,” or made to feel like your safety can wait until paperwork clears, we’re here to prove otherwise. We believe stable housing is the foundation that makes everything else possible, work, healing, school, parenting, recovery, and peace.

This weekly series shares what we’re working on right now: housing assistance plus wraparound support like behavioral health and salon therapy, because dignity matters, and you deserve care that feels human.

Why domestic violence housing assistance matters (more than people admit)

We believe survivors deserve options, real options, not “maybe next month” options.

Housing is often the difference between:

    • being able to leave safely
    • being forced to return because there’s nowhere else to go
    • staying longer than you wanted because rent deposits, transportation, childcare, and paperwork feel impossible

Domestic violence housing assistance matters because it removes the most common barrier to safety: housing instability. When stable housing is in place, everything else becomes more manageable, legal steps, counseling, employment, and rebuilding a support network.

    Key truth we repeat often:
You don’t need to “have everything together” to deserve a safe home. You deserve a safe home so you can get everything together.

We’re aligned with what works: “Housing First” for survivors

We believe in solutions backed by evidence, not just good intentions.

Across the U.S., survivor-centered programs are increasingly using Housing-First models (including Domestic Violence Housing First approaches). The idea is straightforward:

    • Get survivors into stable housing quickly
    • then support them with flexible, trauma-informed services

Instead of requiring a perfect checklist before help is offered, Housing First treats housing as the starting point, not the prize at the end.

That approach resonates with how we serve:

    • We focus on urgent needs (safety + housing) first
    • Then we wrap support around the survivor and their family based on what they choose

What “flexible support” can look like in real life:

    • short-term help with rent or utilities
    • transportation support to get to work, court, school, or appointments
    • childcare assistance so survivors can keep their jobs or attend services
    • basic household needs when starting over (bedding, pantry staples, hygiene items)
    • coaching and advocacy to navigate benefits and documentation

Hands holding house keys in a bright hallway, symbolizing a fresh start through domestic violence housing assistance.

This week’s focus: creating safe spaces with practical, survivor-led steps

We believe survivors are the experts in their own lives. Our role is to listen, advocate, and move with urgency, without judgment.

Here’s what “creating safe spaces this week” looks like inside our housing assistance work:

    ✓ Safety-first housing navigation

    • Identifying safer housing options based on each person’s situation (location preferences, confidentiality concerns, school districts, transportation access)
    • Supporting next steps without pushing anyone to disclose more than they want to share
    • Offering planning support that respects privacy and personal choice

✓ Budget-friendly support planning (because affordability is real life)

We keep it plain: if the numbers don’t work, the plan doesn’t work.
That’s why we help survivors think through:

    • move-in costs (deposit, first month, application fees)
    • basic household setup costs
    • transportation costs
    • ongoing monthly budget to reduce the risk of housing loss later

    ✓ Trauma-informed advocacy

We use language and processes that reduce re-traumatization:

    • no “prove it” tone
    • no shaming questions
    • no pressure to reconcile, report, or relive details to get support

If you’ve ever felt dismissed or doubted, you are not alone, and we’re committed to proving otherwise through how we show up.

Know your rights: protections that can support survivors (VAWA + more)

We believe information is power, especially when systems feel complicated.

Many survivors don’t realize there are protections in place designed to prevent discrimination and housing denial. One major U.S. law is the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which includes housing protections for survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

While every situation is unique, VAWA protections can help ensure that:

    • survivors aren’t denied certain housing assistance solely because of their victim status
    • survivors can request certain safeguards related to safety and household protections

Also, some communities have access to Emergency Housing Vouchers intended to help people fleeing domestic violence and related harm. Availability depends on local housing authorities and funding, but the key point is this:

There may be a pathway, especially if you’ve been told “no” before.
If you need help understanding where to start, we can talk through options.

Who we serve (and why we say it out loud)

We believe naming people matters: because too many communities are erased in “one-size-fits-all” services.

    Our weekly work supports:

    • Women facing domestic violence (including immigrant women and women navigating systems alone)
    • Veterans adjusting to civilian life while managing housing gaps, trauma, or disability-related needs
    • Seniors who deserve safe, stable housing and supportive care as life changes
    • BIPOC and underserved families who have historically been under-resourced or overlooked

If you’ve ever felt like support wasn’t built with you in mind, we built this work to say: you belong here.

Beyond housing: behavioral health support that meets you where you are

We believe healing shouldn’t be gatekept by cost, stigma, or confusing processes.

Housing assistance is life-changing: but so is having someone to talk to who understands trauma, stress, and burnout. That’s why we also focus on behavioral health support and accessible care pathways.

If you’re exploring support options, our telehealth services can be part of your plan: especially when transportation, privacy, or scheduling is a barrier. Explore what’s available here: https://www.pelagie.org/telehealth

What we prioritize in behavioral health support:

    • practical coping tools for anxiety, stress, and overwhelm
    • culturally responsive care (because culture and identity matter)
    • support that respects confidentiality and autonomy
    • coordination with other supports when needed (housing navigation, safety planning, etc.)

No one should have to choose between getting help and staying safe.

Salon therapy: dignity, confidence, and a real moment to breathe

We believe self-care is not shallow: it’s stabilizing.

When someone is rebuilding life after violence, small moments of calm can be powerful. Salon therapy is one of the ways we support the whole person, not just the paperwork.

    Salon therapy can offer:

    • a chance to feel like yourself again
    • a supportive environment that doesn’t ask invasive questions
    • dignity and confidence for interviews, court appearances, or new beginnings
    • a reminder that you are worthy of care right now

It’s not “extra.” It’s part of recovery. It’s part of restoring choice.

A woman sitting peacefully with a laptop, illustrating accessible telehealth and mental health support for survivors.

What to do if you need help right now (clear, simple steps)

We believe urgent moments deserve clear options: no confusing maze.

If you or someone you know needs immediate support, here are starting points commonly used across communities:

    • Call 911 if you are in immediate danger.
    • Call 211 (in many areas) to ask for local housing resources, coordinated entry, or emergency shelter referrals.
    • National Domestic Violence Hotline (U.S.): 1-800-799-7233 (24/7 support and referrals)

And if you want to connect with our team about housing support, behavioral health, or next-step planning:

You don’t need perfect words to reach out. A simple “I need help” is enough.

Our credibility: mission-driven work with real outcomes

We believe trust is earned through transparency, consistency, and results.

Pelagie Foundation Ltd is built for long-term impact, not quick fixes. We bring professional structure to compassionate work: because underserved communities deserve excellence.

A few proof points we’re proud of:

    • 500+ Authors supported
    • 1000+ Books published
    • Stevie Award recognition
    • CFC number (Combined Federal Campaign participation/eligibility)

Our work spans multiple lanes because real life does, too: housing, health, dignity, stability, and community.

A person enjoying salon therapy services, emphasizing the importance of dignity and self-care in recovery.

Partner with us this week: housing stability takes a community

We believe collaboration is how change becomes consistent.

If you’re an organization, landlord, salon professional, clinician, case manager, or community leader, there’s room to partner with us in practical ways.

Ways to collaborate (simple and high-impact)

    • Landlords & property managers: help create survivor-friendly rental pathways
    • Hotels & short-term stays: support emergency relocation options (as available and appropriate)
    • Employers: offer job opportunities that support stability (flexibility matters)
    • Clinicians & behavioral health providers: coordinate care and warm referrals
    • Salons & stylists: join our salon therapy support ecosystem
    • Community groups & faith leaders: share resources without judgment and with confidentiality in mind

If you’re ready to collaborate, explore our partner pathway here: https://www.pelagie.org/partners-affiliations

Question to consider: What would it look like if your organization became a “safe next step” for someone this month?

    Leadership you can connect with

We believe leadership should be visible: especially in advocacy work.

This weekly series is guided by Dr. Christ-Lee Lizaire-Ganthier, CEO, and our broader team’s commitment to turning support into action. We keep the tone real because people’s lives are real: while staying professional because your safety and trust deserve that level of care.

Join the movement: share, refer, and help someone find a safe space

We believe you don’t have to be a professional helper to make a difference.

Here are a few ways to support this work right now:

    • Share this post with a friend, coworker, or community group (you never know who needs it)
    • Refer someone who may need housing support, behavioral health care, or a next-step plan
    • Explore our work and stay connected through our site: https://pelagie.org
    • Shop to support if you’re looking for a mission-aligned way to give: https://www.pelagie.org/shop

If you’ve been looking for a place where advocacy and action actually meet, you’re in the right space. Ready to take the next step: whether for yourself or someone you care about?

  • Looking For Rapid Rehousing? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know Before You Apply

Looking For Rapid Rehousing? Here Are 10 Things You Should Know Before You Apply

If you're experiencing homelessness or housing instability, you're not alone: and rapid rehousing might be the bridge you need to get back on your feet. But before you apply, it helps to know what you're getting into. Let's walk through the essentials together so you can make the best decision for your situation.

    1. Rapid Rehousing Is Designed to Get You Housed Fast (No Waiting Around)

Unlike traditional shelter programs that can keep you in temporary housing for months, rapid rehousing is all about speed. The goal is simple: get you into a permanent home as quickly as possible, without jumping through endless hoops or meeting a bunch of preconditions.

This program recognizes that having a stable roof over your head is the foundation for everything else: finding work, managing your health, rebuilding relationships. You shouldn't have to "earn" housing. You deserve it now.

Diverse family standing in front of apartment building ready to move into permanent housing

    2. You Don't Need to Be "Perfect" to Qualify

Here's something important: rapid rehousing programs don't require you to have a job, sobriety, a clean criminal record, or a certain income level before you apply. If you've been turned away from housing programs in the past because of your circumstances, this is different.

The program meets you where you are. Whether you're a veteran dealing with PTSD, a survivor of domestic violence starting over, or a senior on a fixed income, you're welcome here. Your housing stability shouldn't depend on checking boxes that don't reflect your real life.

    3. Financial Assistance Covers More Than Just Rent

When you're accepted into a rapid rehousing program, you'll typically receive help with:

✓ First month's rent and security deposit
    ✓ Moving costs and transportation
✓ Basic furniture and household essentials
✓ Ongoing rental assistance (usually for 12-24 months)
✓ Utility assistance in some cases

The exact assistance depends on your individual needs and the funding source, but the idea is to remove as many financial barriers as possible so you can focus on getting stable.

    4. You'll Work With a Case Manager (And That's a Good Thing)

You won't be navigating this alone. Every participant is paired with a case manager who becomes your partner in creating a plan for long-term housing stability. You'll meet regularly: usually at least once a month: to work through any challenges and connect you with resources.

Think of your case manager as someone in your corner. Need help finding job training? They've got connections. Struggling with mental health or legal issues? They can point you toward services. Housing discrimination getting in your way? They'll advocate for you.

Case manager meeting with rapid rehousing participant to discuss supportive services and goals

    5. It's Short-Term Help With a Long-Term Goal

Most rapid rehousing programs last between 12 and 24 months. During that time, the financial assistance gradually decreases as your income (hopefully) increases. The goal isn't to make you dependent on the program: it's to equip you with the tools, skills, and stability you need to maintain housing on your own after the program ends.

You'll work with your case manager to build a realistic plan for self-sufficiency. That might include job training, budgeting workshops, credit repair assistance, or connecting with ongoing community resources.

    6. You'll Sign a Real Lease (With Real Tenant Rights)

This isn't shelter housing or transitional housing where you might have limited rights. With rapid rehousing, you'll sign a formal lease agreement with a private landlord, just like any other tenant. That means:

✓ You have legal tenant protections
✓ You can stay in the home even after rental assistance ends
✓ You're not required to move when the program period is over
✓ You're building a rental history that can help you in the future

This is your home, not temporary housing. You get to transition in place and maintain the stability you've built.

Person receiving apartment keys with moving boxes, symbolizing transition to permanent housing

    7. You'll Be Expected to Contribute What You Can

While the program provides substantial rental assistance, you'll typically be asked to contribute a portion of your income toward rent and utilities: even if it's a small amount. This helps you build budgeting skills and prepares you for full financial responsibility down the line.

The amount you contribute is based on what you can actually afford, not some arbitrary percentage. Your case manager will work with you to figure out what's realistic given your income and expenses.

    8. Supportive Services Are Tailored to Your Specific Needs

No two people experiencing housing instability are dealing with the same challenges, and rapid rehousing programs recognize that. The supportive services you receive will be customized to help you overcome your specific barriers to stable housing.

    This might include:

    • Employment counseling and job placement assistance
    • Mental health or substance use support
    • Primary care and behavioral health integration
    • Legal assistance with eviction records or criminal backgrounds
    • Life skills coaching and budgeting help
    • Child care assistance or family services
    • Transportation support

At Pelagie Foundation, we believe everyone deserves access to comprehensive support services that address the whole person, not just their housing status.

    9. The Clock Starts When You're Housed (Not When You Apply)

One common question: when does the 12-24 month period begin? The good news is that it starts when you actually move into your permanent housing, not when you first apply or get accepted into the program. So the time spent searching for housing and going through the application process doesn't count against your assistance period.

This takes some of the pressure off the housing search process. You and your case manager can focus on finding the right place for you without worrying about burning through your assistance time.

Case manager and participant reviewing rapid rehousing documents and housing stability plan

    10. Success Looks Different for Everyone (And That's Okay)

The ultimate goal of rapid rehousing is to help you maintain stable housing independently after the program ends. But "success" doesn't always mean you'll be completely self-sufficient in 12 months. Some people need longer. Some people will still need ongoing support from community resources even after they graduate from the program.

That's not failure: that's real life. The program recognizes that housing stability is a journey, not a destination. What matters is that you're moving forward and have the tools and connections you need to keep your housing secure.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

If rapid rehousing sounds like it could be the right fit for your situation, don't wait. Housing instability affects every aspect of your life, and you deserve support now.

At Pelagie Foundation, we're committed to helping veterans, survivors of domestic violence, seniors, and individuals experiencing homelessness find pathways to stable housing and supportive services. We believe everyone deserves a safe place to call home, regardless of where they've been or what challenges they're facing.

Need help figuring out if rapid rehousing is right for you? Want to learn more about our programs and services? Reach out to us: we're here to help you navigate your options and connect you with the resources you need.

Your housing journey starts with a single step. Let's take it together.

    • Provides immediate support for basic needs
    • Builds trust over time, without pressure

  • Salon Therapy Matters: Why Hair Care Is Whole-Person Healing

Salon Therapy Matters: Why Hair Care Is Whole-Person Healing

If you've ever felt invisible, overlooked, or like your trauma was just supposed to disappear overnight, you're not alone. And at Pelagie Foundation, we believe healing doesn't happen in just one way. It happens when someone sees you, truly cares for you, and helps you reclaim the parts of yourself that feel lost.

That's exactly what happens at Christlee's Hair Boutique, our unique salon therapy program that's changing lives one haircut, one conversation, one moment of dignity at a time.

What Is Salon Therapy? (And Why It's Different)

Salon therapy session showing compassionate hair care at Christlee's Hair Boutique

Salon therapy isn't your typical trip to the beauty shop. Yes, there are haircuts, styling, and professional treatments, but it goes so much deeper than that.

Salon therapy is whole-person healing. It combines:

    • Physical restoration of hair and scalp health
    • Emotional support through compassionate, trauma-informed care
    • Mental wellness practices like stress reduction and mindfulness
    • Dignity restoration for those who've been through the unthinkable

At Christlee's Hair Boutique, we serve veterans, seniors, and women fleeing domestic violence, people who've weathered storms most of us can't imagine. For them, a haircut isn't just about looking good. It's about feeling human again.

Why Hair Care Is Trauma Recovery

When someone experiences trauma, whether from combat, abuse, or the grinding stress of homelessness, self-care often becomes the first casualty. Basic routines fall away. Looking in the mirror becomes painful. The idea of "pampering yourself" feels impossible, even ridiculous.

But here's what we've learned after serving over 50,000 individuals: Restoring your outside helps heal your inside.

When a survivor sits in our chair, we're not just trimming split ends. We're creating a safe space where:

✓ They can exhale without fear
    ✓ Someone listens without judgment
✓ Touch is gentle, not violent
✓ They control what happens to their body

For many of our clients, it's the first time in months, or years, that someone has cared for them with genuine compassion. That moment matters more than you might think.

    The Science Behind Salon Therapy

Woman experiencing healing scalp massage during salon therapy for trauma recovery

You might wonder: Can a haircut really help with trauma recovery? Research says yes: and here's why.

    Physical Hair and Scalp Restoration

Professional salon treatments don't just make hair look prettier. They actually repair damaged hair from within, using salon-grade formulations that penetrate deeper than anything you can buy at the drugstore.

    These treatments:

    • Rebuild naturally occurring amino acids in hair structure
    • Restore moisture and shine that stress and trauma strip away
    • Strengthen strands weakened by neglect or harsh living conditions
    • Address scalp issues like dryness, dandruff, and irritation

Scalp massages during treatment do even more: they stimulate blood circulation, distribute natural oils, and create an optimal environment for healthy hair growth. For someone who's been living on the streets or escaping an abusive situation, this kind of physical care is transformative.

    Mental and Emotional Wellness

Here's where it gets really powerful: Clinical research shows that salon therapy reduces stress and boosts overall well-being. It's not just about vanity: it's about nervous system regulation.

When our trained stylists work with clients, they're providing:

    • Soothing touch that helps calm hypervigilance
    • Predictable routines that create safety
    • Mindful moments that reduce anxiety
    • Self-care modeling that clients can take with them

One veteran told us: "I haven't let anyone touch my head since I came back from deployment. But here, I felt safe. For the first time in years, I could just… relax."

    That's not cosmetic. That's healing.

Who We Serve at Christlee's Hair Boutique

Veterans, seniors, and women receiving compassionate salon therapy services

    Veterans Transitioning Home

Combat changes you. Many veterans struggle with PTSD, anxiety, and the challenge of feeling "normal" again after service. Salon therapy gives them a judgment-free space to reconnect with civilian life, process emotions, and practice self-care in a structured way.

    Seniors Facing Housing Instability

Older adults experiencing homelessness or housing crisis often face invisibility and ageism. At our boutique, they're treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. A fresh haircut, a kind conversation, and professional care remind them: You matter. You're valued. You're not forgotten.

    Women Escaping Domestic Violence

For survivors of domestic abuse, reclaiming your body and your choices is essential to recovery. At Christlee's, women have full control over their experience. They choose their style. They set the pace. They decide when they're ready.

Many tell us it's the first time they've made a decision about their appearance for themselves: not to please or appease someone else. That shift is profound.

How It Works: Trauma-Informed Care in Action

Our stylists aren't just talented: they're trauma-informed professionals trained to recognize signs of distress, respect boundaries, and create safety.

Here's what makes Christlee's Hair Boutique different:

    ✓ No pressure, no judgment
You don't have to explain your story unless you want to.

    ✓ Customized treatments
Every client gets a personalized assessment and treatment plan based on their unique hair needs and comfort level.

    ✓ Integrated with other services
Salon therapy is part of our broader programs, which include housing support, behavioral health, and benefits navigation. Healing happens holistically.

    ✓ Long-lasting results
Professional treatments provide benefits that last weeks or even months: giving clients sustained confidence and self-esteem.

    ✓ Safe, welcoming environment
Our boutique is designed to feel warm, not clinical. You're not a patient here. You're a person.

    The Ripple Effect: Real Impact

Client showing renewed confidence after therapeutic hair care session

When someone walks out of Christlee's Hair Boutique with a fresh cut, styled hair, and a genuine smile, something shifts. They stand a little taller. They make eye contact. They start believing they deserve good things.

    That confidence ripples outward:

    • They're more likely to attend job interviews
    • They reconnect with family they've been avoiding
    • They engage more in therapy and housing programs
    • They start taking other steps toward stability

Salon therapy isn't the only solution: but it's often the first step that makes everything else possible.

One client said it best: "I came in feeling like nothing. I left feeling like someone. That someone showed me I could keep going."

Whole-Person Healing Means All of You

At Pelagie Foundation, we don't believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Trauma is complex. Recovery is messy. Healing doesn't happen in a straight line.

That's why we offer integrated services that address every part of your life:

    • Housing and street outreach through our Street Outreach Program
    • Behavioral health and trauma recovery via telehealth services
    • Benefits navigation for ACA, Medicaid, SNAP, and TANF
    • Salon therapy at Christlee's Hair Boutique

You deserve care that sees all of you: not just your diagnosis, your housing status, or your income level. You're a whole person. And whole-person healing starts with dignity, compassion, and someone who genuinely cares.

    Ready to Experience Salon Therapy?

Whether you're a veteran finding your way back, a senior facing uncertainty, or a woman rebuilding after abuse: you don't have to do this alone.

Christlee's Hair Boutique is here for you. No judgment. No barriers. Just compassionate care that honors who you are and who you're becoming.

The Pelagie Promise: A New Home for Healing and Hope

Something special is on the way.

We're building a new digital home for the Pelagie Foundation: and we wanted you to be the first to know. This isn't just a website launch. It's a promise. A commitment. A place where dignity, healing, and hope come together for those who need it most.

If you've ever felt invisible, overlooked, or left behind by systems that were supposed to help you: this is for you. We see you. We believe in you. And we're here to walk alongside you.

    What Is the Pelagie Promise?

The Pelagie Promise is simple: Everyone deserves a safe place to heal, and no one should have to do it alone.

We believe that healing isn't just about having a roof over your head or access to a doctor. It's about being treated with dignity. It's about having someone in your corner who understands that you're more than your circumstances. It's about rebuilding not just your life, but your sense of self-worth.

Diverse hands joining together representing community support and healing at Pelagie Foundation

That's why we've built our work around three core pillars:

Housing Support – Safe, stable housing assistance for those in crisis
Primary Care Behavioral Health – Compassionate mental and physical healthcare that treats the whole person
Salon Therapy – Dignity-focused personal care that restores confidence and self-esteem

These aren't just services. They're lifelines. And they're all rooted in one belief: you deserve better, and we're here to prove it.

Who We Serve (And Why It Matters)

At Pelagie Foundation, we focus on three communities who are often underserved, underrepresented, and underestimated:

    Veterans

You served your country with honor. Now it's our turn to serve you. Whether you're transitioning out of service, facing housing instability, or navigating the complex world of VA benefits, we're here to help. Our programs are designed specifically with veterans in mind: because we understand that your journey doesn't end when the uniform comes off.

    Women Facing Domestic Violence

Leaving an abusive situation is one of the bravest things you'll ever do. We know it's also one of the hardest. Our emergency housing assistance, behavioral health support, and salon therapy services are here to help you reclaim your safety, your dignity, and your future. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to take the first step, and we'll be there to walk the rest of the path with you.

    Seniors

Growing older shouldn't mean being forgotten. Whether you're facing housing insecurity, limited access to healthcare, or simply feeling isolated, we're here to remind you that your story isn't over. You matter. Your needs matter. And you deserve care that honors your dignity and respects your independence.

Housing: More Than Just a Roof

When we talk about housing, we're not just talking about a place to sleep. We're talking about stability. Safety. A foundation to rebuild your life.

    Our Housing Support Programs provide:

✓ Emergency shelter assistance for families and individuals in crisis
✓ Transitional housing support for veterans and survivors
✓ Rapid rehousing services to help you move from crisis to stability
✓ Application assistance and case management to navigate complex systems
✓ Living enhancements like furniture, household items, and essentials

We work with you to create a personalized plan that addresses your unique situation. Because your path to stability won't look like anyone else's: and that's okay. We meet you where you are and help you get where you want to go.

Primary Care Behavioral Health: Healing the Whole Person

Your mental health and physical health aren't separate: they're connected. That's why our Primary Care Behavioral Health approach treats the whole person, not just symptoms.

Through our Pelagie Care Clinic, we offer:

✓ Telehealth services across Georgia for accessible, convenient care
✓ Integrated behavioral health and primary care
✓ Trauma-informed care that respects your experiences
✓ Support for PTSD, anxiety, depression, and more
✓ Care coordination to ensure you're never navigating the system alone

Salon Therapy: Restoring Dignity, One Session at a Time

Here's something we've learned: sometimes healing starts with looking in the mirror and recognizing yourself again.

Our Salon Therapy program isn't just about haircuts and manicures (though those are pretty great too). It's about dignity. It's about taking time for yourself when the world has told you that you don't matter. It's about walking out feeling like the person you know you are: not the circumstances you've been through.

    Salon Therapy includes:

    ✓ Professional hair care services
✓ Personal grooming and self-care support
    ✓ A safe, judgment-free environment
✓ Connection with caring professionals who see you
    ✓ Confidence-building in a supportive space

Whether you're preparing for a job interview, reconnecting with family, or simply reclaiming your sense of self, our salon is here for you.

  • More Than Just a Haircut: How Salon Therapy heals from the outside in

More Than Just a Haircut: How Salon Therapy heals from the outside in

When you're rebuilding your life after trauma, searching for housing, or simply trying to find your footing again, a haircut might seem like the least important thing on your list. But here's what we've learned at Pelagie Foundation: sometimes healing starts with the person staring back at you in the mirror.

Stylist gently caring for client's hair in welcoming salon therapy environment

The Real Power of Feeling Like Yourself Again

We believe that self-care isn't a luxury: it's a fundamental part of recovery and dignity. That's why our salon services at Christlee's Hair Boutique are designed to do so much more than change your appearance. They're designed to help you reclaim yourself.

The science backs this up in ways that might surprise you. Research shows that salon treatments can reduce stress levels by nearly 30%, while the calming environment itself actively lowers cortisol: your body's main stress hormone. When you're dealing with trauma, housing instability, or the weight of starting over, that kind of stress reduction isn't just nice to have. It's essential.

And it doesn't stop there. Studies in the Journal of Social Psychology found that 78% of people reported increased self-confidence after a hairstyle change. That boost in confidence? It creates a foundation for tackling everything else: job interviews, housing applications, reconnecting with family, or simply believing you deserve better.

Why This Matters for Our Community

Client smiling at reflection in salon mirror after confidence-building haircut

At Pelagie Foundation, we work with veterans, women overcoming domestic violence, and seniors who've been told: sometimes for years: that their needs don't matter. That they should be grateful for what they get. That looking good is superficial when you're "just trying to survive."

    We're here to prove otherwise.

For Veterans: You've served this country, often at great personal cost. The transition back to civilian life can leave you feeling disconnected from who you were and uncertain about who you're becoming. Salon therapy offers a space where you're not defined by your service or your struggles: you're simply someone worthy of care and attention.

For Domestic Violence Survivors: Abuse doesn't just leave physical scars. It chips away at your sense of self, your confidence, your belief that you deserve anything good. When you sit in our salon chair, we see you. Not as a victim, but as the strong, resilient person you're becoming. That hour of care can remind you of something crucial: you matter.

For Seniors: Aging often comes with feeling invisible, especially if you're facing housing challenges or health issues. Our salon services affirm that your dignity doesn't diminish with age. You deserve to feel beautiful, confident, and seen: at every stage of life.

The Healing Connection You Didn't Know You Needed

Here's something powerful that research has uncovered: the social connection that happens during salon visits can reduce loneliness and depression by as much as 40%. It's not just about the haircut: it's about the conversation, the human touch, the feeling that someone cares about how you're doing.

Diverse clients connecting through conversation in healing salon community space

In our salon, those conversations matter. We create a space where you can be yourself, share as much or as little as you want, and simply exist without judgment. For many of our clients, it's the first place in a long time where they've felt truly safe to relax.

    The combination is transformative:

    • Physical touch in a safe, professional environment helps reduce anxiety
    • Social interaction combats isolation and builds community
    • Focused attention on your needs promotes mindfulness and present-moment awareness
    • Visible results provide tangible proof that positive change is possible

When you leave our salon, you're not just leaving with a new style. You're leaving with evidence that you're worth the time, the care, and the investment. And that evidence? It follows you home. It shows up in job interviews. It appears when you look in the mirror before bed.

    The Outside-In Approach to Wellness

Traditional therapy focuses on healing from the inside out: and that's important work. But we've found that healing can also happen from the outside in. When you look in the mirror and see someone who looks cared for, who looks put together, who looks good: something shifts internally.

Hands receiving therapeutic manicure promoting self-care and emotional wellness

Nail care, for example, isn't just about pretty hands. Research shows it specifically elevates positive emotions, promotes relaxation, and increases feelings of vitalization. The act of caring for your appearance becomes practice for caring for yourself in other ways: eating better, keeping appointments, setting boundaries, believing you deserve good things.

This isn't vanity. This is survival. This is reclaiming your narrative.

    What Makes Our Approach Different

Trauma-informed care: Our stylists understand that simple actions: like someone standing behind you or touching your hair: can trigger past trauma. We move at your pace and respect your boundaries.

Sliding scale services: We believe cost should never be a barrier to dignity. Our services work within your budget.

Holistic integration: Salon therapy is part of our broader approach to supporting your whole journey, from housing to healthcare to job readiness.

Community building: You're not just a client: you're part of our Pelagie family. The connections you make here matter.

    More Than a Service: It's a Statement

Every time we offer salon services to a veteran sleeping in their car, a woman escaping an abusive relationship, or a senior struggling with housing: we're making a statement: Your dignity is non-negotiable. You deserve care. You deserve to feel good about yourself.

Confident client posture transformation after empowering salon therapy session

That might sound simple, but for someone who's been surviving in crisis mode, it can be revolutionary. The better you feel about your appearance, the more confident you become. The more confident you become, the better equipped you are to tackle the bigger challenges. It's a positive cycle that starts with something as simple as a haircut.

Research shows this cycle is real and measurable. Regular salon visits encourage mindfulness and self-care habits that extend beyond the appointment itself. You start believing you're worth the effort. You start making other positive changes. You start seeing yourself differently.

And when you see yourself differently, the world starts treating you differently too.

    Ready to Experience Salon Therapy?

At Pelagie Foundation, we've seen firsthand how powerful it can be when someone walks out of our salon standing a little taller, smiling a little brighter, believing a little more in their own worth. That's not just a haircut: that's healing.

Whether you're a veteran finding your way back, a survivor rebuilding your life, or a senior deserving of respect and care, we're here. Our salon services are part of our commitment to serving the whole person: because we believe you deserve to feel good on the outside while you're healing on the inside.

Interested in learning more about our salon services? Visit Christlee's Hair Boutique or call us at 470-356-6285. Let's start your healing journey together: one appointment at a time.

Because you're not just surviving. You're reclaiming yourself. And that deserves to be celebrated.

  • The Legacy of the Black Salon: How Hair Care Became a Movement for Healing

The Legacy of the Black Salon: How Hair Care Became a Movement for Healing

If you've ever sat in a Black salon chair, you know it's more than just a haircut. It's therapy. It's community. It's a place where you can show up exactly as you are and leave feeling seen, heard, and whole.

That's not by accident. For generations, Black salons have served as sanctuaries: spaces where dignity was restored, resistance was organized, and healing happened one head at a time. At Pelagie Foundation, we honor that legacy through our Salon Therapy program, recognizing that hair care has always been about so much more than aesthetics.

It's about reclaiming power. It's about survival. It's about love.

From Trauma to Triumph: The Birth of an Industry

The story of Black hair care in America begins with violence. During the transatlantic slave trade, enslaved African women had their hair forcibly shaved: a deliberate act of dehumanization designed to strip them of cultural identity and self-worth. But even in the darkest circumstances, they found ways to preserve their heritage through traditional braids, twists, and protective styles passed down in whispers and shadows.

Grandmother braiding young girl's natural hair preserving Black hair care traditions

After Emancipation in 1865, a new kind of oppression emerged. Black people faced relentless pressure to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards just to survive. Straight hair became a ticket to employment, social acceptance, and safety. This created "texturism": discrimination against those with kinkier, coiler hair: a hierarchy that rewarded assimilation and punished authenticity.

But out of that pain came pioneers.

Annie Turnbo Malone launched the Black hair care industry at the turn of the 20th century, creating an entire line of products specifically for Black women. She didn't just sell bottles: she sold dignity, going door-to-door in St. Louis, building community one demonstration at a time.

Madam C.J. Walker followed in 1905, becoming America's first self-made female millionaire. Walker built more than a business; she built an empire that included factories, salons, and training schools focused on scalp health and hair growth for African American women. These weren't just commercial ventures. They were acts of resistance. They were declarations that Black women deserved to invest in themselves, to feel beautiful, to take up space.

    The Salon as Sacred Ground

Black salons became something extraordinary: centers of economic independence, cultural pride, and collective healing. They were places where Black women could gather without fear, share knowledge without judgment, and celebrate their identities without apology.

Black woman in 1920s salon chair representing early Black hair care entrepreneurship

Think about what that meant: and still means. In a world that constantly told Black people they weren't enough, the salon said otherwise. It was a space where:

    • Veterans returning from war could find community and understanding
    • Elders could share wisdom and feel valued
    • Survivors of trauma could experience gentle touch and care
    • Young people could learn about their heritage and beauty
    • Organizers could plan, strategize, and mobilize

The salon chair became a therapist's couch, a community center, a classroom, and a political headquarters all at once. Conversations flowed as freely as the hair products: about family, finances, faith, and freedom. Real healing happened between the shampoo bowl and the blow dryer.

    Hair as Revolution

The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s transformed Black hair into a political statement. The Afro: natural, unapologetic, powerful: became the symbol of Black pride and activism. When Angela Davis and members of the Black Panther Party wore their hair in its natural state, they weren't just making a fashion choice. They were making a declaration: Black is Beautiful.

Black woman with Afro hairstyle symbolizing 1960s natural hair movement and Black pride

This was revolutionary. For the first time in generations, Black people were publicly rejecting the pressure to assimilate. They were saying, "We will not shrink ourselves to fit into your standards. We will take up space exactly as we are."

That natural hair movement represented healing from generations of internalized oppression. It was about reclaiming autonomy over one's own body and appearance: a form of self-determination that rippled far beyond hair.

The fight continues today through legislation like the CROWN Act (Creating A Respectful And Open World For Natural Hair), which addresses discrimination against natural hairstyles in workplaces and schools. Because even now, Black people face consequences for wearing their hair naturally: proof that this battle for dignity and acceptance is far from over.

Carrying the Legacy Forward: Salon Therapy at Pelagie Foundation

At Pelagie Foundation, we understand that the legacy of the Black salon isn't just history: it's a living, breathing practice of community care and healing. That's why we created our Salon Therapy program.

We serve veterans who've given everything for this country but often struggle to find spaces where they're truly seen. We serve seniors who deserve to feel dignified and beautiful at every age. We serve survivors of domestic violence, homelessness, and trauma who need gentle care and human connection as much as they need a haircut.

✓ Providing professional hair care services with dignity and respect
✓ Building community connections that extend beyond the chair
✓ Offering affordable services because self-care shouldn't be a luxury
✓ Training the next generation in both technical skills and compassionate care

When someone sits in our salon chair, they're not just getting their hair done. They're participating in a centuries-old tradition of resistance, resilience, and restoration. They're connecting to a legacy of Black women who transformed an instrument of oppression into a tool of liberation.

    More Than a Service: It's a Movement

The beauty of salon therapy is that it addresses the whole person. Research shows that personal grooming and appearance directly impact mental health, self-esteem, and social connection: especially for marginalized communities. When veterans struggle with PTSD, when seniors face isolation, when survivors rebuild their lives, something as "simple" as a haircut can be transformative.

This is what Annie Turnbo Malone understood when she went door-to-door. This is what Madam C.J. Walker knew when she built her training schools. They recognized that hair care was never just about hair. It was about humanity, dignity, and the radical act of saying, "You matter."

Our programs at Pelagie Foundation carry that same conviction. We believe that everyone: regardless of their circumstances: deserves to feel seen, valued, and beautiful. We believe that healing happens in community. We believe that sometimes the most powerful therapy happens not in a clinical office, but in a salon chair where skilled hands work with care and conversations flow freely.

    Join the Legacy

The story of the Black salon is ultimately about transformation: taking spaces of trauma and turning them into sanctuaries of healing. It's about entrepreneurs who built empires from nothing. It's about activists who wore their hair as armor. It's about everyday people who showed up for each other, one appointment at a time.

That legacy lives on in our work. When you support Pelagie Foundation, you're not just supporting a nonprofit: you're investing in a movement that recognizes the profound connection between personal care and collective liberation.

Whether you're a veteran seeking community, a senior deserving dignity, a survivor rebuilding your life, or someone who simply wants to be part of this legacy, we're here for you.

Ready to experience Salon Therapy or support our mission? Visit our website or call us at 470-356-6285. Let's continue the legacy together: one head, one heart, one community at a time.

Because when we care for each other, we heal together. And that's the most beautiful revolution of all.

  • The Healing Power of the Black Salon: A Legacy of Mental Health and Community Care

The Healing Power of the Black Salon: A Legacy of Mental Health and Community Care

This Black History Month, we're celebrating a legacy that goes far beyond hairstyles and barbershop fades. We're honoring the Black salon and barbershop as what they've always been: sanctuaries, healing spaces, and unofficial mental health centers for our communities.

If you've ever sat in that chair and found yourself opening up about things you hadn't planned to share: about stress at work, struggles at home, or that weight you've been carrying: you already know what we're talking about. The Black salon isn't just where we get our hair done. It's where we get our minds right, too.

More Than a Haircut: The Historical Roots of Healing Spaces

Since the turn of the 19th century, barbershops and beauty salons have served as sanctuaries for Black Americans. These weren't just businesses: they were safe havens where Black people could be fully themselves, discuss community issues without fear, and find genuine connection in a world that often denied them dignity.

Historic Black barbershop interior from the 1950s serving as community sanctuary

Think about it: Where else could a Black person in the 1920s, '40s, or '60s sit comfortably for an hour or two, engage in honest conversation about politics, share vulnerabilities, and leave feeling seen and heard? The salon became that rare space where judgment stayed at the door and community walked right in.

These spaces functioned as informal community centers long before anyone thought to call them that. People played games, debated current events, shared job opportunities, and looked out for each other's well-being. The person holding the clippers or the curling iron wasn't just a service provider: they were a confidant, an advisor, and sometimes, a lifeline.

The Mental Health Crisis We Can't Ignore

Here's the hard truth: Black communities face significant mental health disparities. According to recent data, suicide rates among Black men have been rising, and many in our communities still struggle with the stigma around seeking mental health support. Traditional therapy can feel inaccessible: financially, geographically, or culturally. There's often a deep-rooted mistrust of medical systems that have historically failed or even harmed Black people.

But you know where people do feel comfortable? In the barbershop chair. At the salon sink. In spaces that have earned trust over generations.

That's why the evolution of salons and barbershops into formalized mental health support spaces isn't revolutionary: it's revelatory. We're finally recognizing and honoring what these spaces have always done, and giving them the tools to do it even better.

Modern Movements: Barbershops as Mental Health Hubs

Across the country, innovative programs are formalizing what Black salons have been doing informally for over a century. The Confess Project has trained over 1,400 barbers across 47 cities to serve as mental health mentors for Black men and boys. Their year-long training program, designed with mental health experts, teaches barbers to listen effectively, reduce stigma, and connect clients with resources. They estimate reaching 2 million people in 2022 alone.

Similarly, Barbershop Talk with Brothers, operated by the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health, has partnered with more than 170 barbershops and salons to provide health education training. Some participating barbershops now feature kiosks where customers can privately search for resources related to food, housing, and counseling.

Why do these programs work? Three key reasons:

Deep Trust – Barbers and stylists maintain long-standing relationships with their clients. When you've been going to the same person for years, opening up about depression, anxiety, or stress feels natural, not forced.

Accessibility – With over 100,000 barbers providing services across rural, suburban, and urban areas in the U.S., these spaces reach communities that may distrust traditional medical systems or face significant barriers to mental health care.

Cultural Comfort – There's no clinical coldness, no intake forms, no insurance hurdles. Just conversation, connection, and care that feels familiar.

Research backs this up. Studies examining barber-based mental health programs show they create measurable, lasting change. Clients report processing personal challenges during their appointments and applying insights from these conversations to improve their lives.

Pelagie Foundation's Salon Therapy: Honoring the Legacy, Expanding the Healing

At Pelagie Foundation, we believe in meeting people where they are: and sometimes, where you are is in a salon chair. That's why we've integrated behavioral health services directly into the salon experience through Christ-Lee's Hair Boutique.

We're not trying to reinvent the wheel. We're honoring a legacy that's been healing our communities for generations and giving it professional support. Our approach recognizes that mental wellness doesn't always start in a therapist's office. Sometimes it starts with a wash and set. Sometimes it begins when someone asks, "How are you really doing?" and genuinely waits for the answer.

    Our Salon Therapy model combines:

Professional cosmetology services that restore confidence and dignity
Trained staff who understand the connection between self-care and mental wellness
Access to behavioral health resources for clients who need additional support
A judgment-free environment where vulnerability is welcomed, not stigmatized
Community connection that reminds people they're not alone in their struggles

We're particularly focused on serving those who've been underserved by traditional mental health systems: veterans, immigrants, BIPOC communities, and individuals experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. Because everyone deserves a space where they can feel whole.

Breaking Down Barriers, One Appointment at a Time

The beauty of integrating mental health support into salon spaces is how naturally it dismantles barriers. There's no "I'm going to therapy" announcement required. No explanation needed for taking care of yourself. You're simply getting your hair done: and if you happen to leave feeling lighter mentally and emotionally, that's the magic of the space working as intended.

For many in our communities, shame and stigma around mental health remain significant obstacles. The salon provides cover and comfort. It normalizes the conversation. It makes wellness feel achievable rather than clinical.

Our behavioral health services extend beyond the salon walls too, offering telehealth options for continued support. But that first touchpoint: that initial moment of connection and trust: often happens in the chair.

Join the Movement: Your Role in Community Healing

This Black History Month, we're not just celebrating history: we're actively creating it. The work of community healing doesn't belong to therapists alone. It belongs to all of us: the barbers, the stylists, the clients who show up authentically, and the organizations willing to innovate.

If you're a salon or barbershop owner interested in bringing this model to your space, we want to talk. If you're someone who needs support and isn't sure where to start, we're here. If you believe in the power of community care and want to support this work, there are ways to get involved.

The Black salon has always been a place of transformation: not just physical, but spiritual and emotional too. At Pelagie Foundation, we're honoring that legacy by ensuring these sacred spaces can continue their healing work for generations to come.

This Week at Pelagie: 5 Lives Changed Through Veteran Transitional Housing and Salon Therapy

Hey friends! This week has been absolutely incredible at Pelagie Foundation, and I had to share some of the amazing transformations happening right here in our community. We believe that everyone deserves dignity, safety, and a fresh start: no matter what circumstances brought them to our door. And this week? We've witnessed five powerful stories that prove just how life-changing comprehensive support can be.

Marcus: From Deployment to Displacement to Dignity

Marcus served two tours overseas, but the hardest battle came when he returned home. After losing his job and struggling with PTSD, he found himself couch-surfing and eventually sleeping in his car. "I felt like I'd failed," Marcus told us. "After everything I'd done for my country, I couldn't even keep a roof over my head."

That's when Marcus discovered our veteran transitional housing program. Within 48 hours of his call to 470-356-6285, we had Marcus in safe, stable housing. But here's the thing: we don't just hand someone keys and call it a day. Marcus also connected with our primary care behavioral health services, where he finally found a therapist who understood military trauma.

Three months later? Marcus has a job interview lined up, he's sleeping through the night for the first time in years, and he's helping us mentor other veterans who are just starting their journey. "Pelagie didn't just give me a place to stay," he said. "They gave me my life back."

Sarah: Breaking Free After 12 Years

Sarah lived with abuse for over a decade. She had three kids, no job, and nowhere to go. The fear of homelessness kept her trapped longer than the actual abuse did. Sound familiar? You're not alone, and you're not stuck.

When Sarah finally made the call: the hardest call of her life: our team was ready. Our domestic violence housing assistance program provides immediate, confidential shelter. No judgment. No bureaucratic runaround. Just safe space and support when you need it most.

But Sarah's story doesn't end with escape. She also discovered our Salon Therapy program, which honestly might be one of the most underrated healing tools we offer. "I hadn't felt beautiful in years," Sarah shared. "The first time I sat in that salon chair and someone treated me with care: I cried. It sounds small, but it made me remember who I was before all this happened."

Today, Sarah's working part-time while her kids are in school, she's secured her own apartment, and she volunteers with our outreach team. She's proof that with the right support system, you can absolutely rebuild your life.

Dorothy: 76 and Finally Feeling Seen

Dorothy worked hard her entire life. Raised five kids as a single mom. Paid her taxes. Did everything "right." But at 76, with mounting medical bills and rent increases she couldn't keep up with, she was facing eviction. "I never thought I'd be here," she told us quietly during her intake. "I never asked for help before."

Here's what we want every senior to know: asking for help isn't failure. It's wisdom. Our senior housing assistance program exists because we recognize that our elders deserve better than stress and instability after a lifetime of contribution.

We connected Dorothy with affordable housing within her budget and linked her to our primary care behavioral health services to address the anxiety and depression that had developed during her housing crisis. The difference in her demeanor has been remarkable. "I can breathe again," she said last week. "I'm not spending every night awake worrying about where I'll go."

James: The Power of Integrated Care

James is a 52-year-old veteran who came to us through our veteran transitional housing program, but his real breakthrough came through something unexpected: our integrated approach to care. James had been dealing with chronic pain, depression, and the aftermath of military sexual trauma for years. Traditional healthcare settings felt cold and fragmented to him.

Our primary care behavioral health model changed everything. Instead of bouncing between different providers who didn't talk to each other, James found a team that coordinated his care. Physical health, mental health, housing stability, job training: all under one roof, all working together.

"It's the first time I felt like I was being treated as a whole person, not just a collection of problems," James explained. The salon therapy sessions became part of his healing process too. "I know it might sound weird for a guy to say this, but sitting in that chair, having someone take care of me with no judgment: it helped me start taking care of myself again."

James now has stable housing, he's managing his health conditions effectively, and he's working part-time at a local warehouse. But more importantly? He's smiling again.

Brittany: When Systems Fail, Community Doesn't

Brittany's story hits different. She's a 29-year-old mom who fled domestic violence with two kids under five. She tried every resource: called every hotline, filled out every application. The waitlists were months long. The eligibility requirements were impossible. The system kept telling her to wait while her ex kept finding her.

When Brittany reached our team, she was sleeping in her car with her kids, trying to keep them enrolled in school while hiding from her abuser. Our domestic violence shelter for women doesn't operate on waitlists. We operate on urgency and humanity.

Within 24 hours, Brittany and her kids had a safe place to sleep. Within a week, she had a safety plan, legal advocacy connections, and childcare support so she could start job hunting. The Salon Therapy program gave her something she hadn't experienced in years: an hour where she could just be, without fear, without demands, without survival mode activated.

"You all saved our lives," Brittany told us. "Not just by giving us shelter, but by making us feel human again." Today, Brittany's working full-time, her kids are thriving in school, and she's building the independent life she deserves.

    Why These Stories Matter

These five people represent hundreds more who walk through our doors every year. They're veterans who served this country and came home to fight new battles. They're survivors who found the courage to leave and needed support to stay gone. They're seniors who worked their entire lives and deserve security in their later years.

Every person deserves access to veteran transitional housing, domestic violence housing assistance, senior housing assistance, and wraparound services like primary care behavioral health and salon therapy. These aren't luxuries. They're lifelines.

Mother and children safe in domestic violence housing assistance shelter

At Pelagie Foundation, we've created an ecosystem of care because we know that housing alone isn't enough. You need mental health support. You need to feel human and dignified. You need people who believe in your capacity to rebuild and thrive. That's what we do.

If you or someone you know needs support, don't wait until the situation becomes unbearable. Call us at 470-356-6285. Whether you're a veteran struggling with the transition home, someone fleeing violence, or a senior facing housing instability: we're here.

Visit our programs page to learn more about how we can help, or check out our telehealth services if in-person visits are challenging right now.

This week, five lives changed. Next week, it could be yours or someone you care about. Healing is possible. Safety is possible. A fresh start is possible. We believe that with every fiber of our being, and we're here to prove it: one person, one family, one story at a time.

Be part of our movement. Whether you need services or want to support our mission, we're stronger together. Ready to make a difference? Reach out today.
