Senior Housing Assistance Matters: Why Staying Connected is Essential for Our Elders

Getting older is a journey that should be marked by dignity, comfort, and deep-rooted connection. But for many of our elders, the reality is far more challenging. At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we believe that housing isn’t just about having four walls and a roof; it’s about creating a safe haven where our seniors can thrive, stay healthy, and remain active members of the community they helped build.

If you’ve ever felt that the system wasn’t designed for you: or for the elders in your life: you’re not alone. Too often, our seniors, especially those from BIPOC, immigrant, and underserved backgrounds, face systemic barriers that make finding affordable, supportive housing feel like an uphill battle. We’re here to prove otherwise.

The Invisible Crisis: Why Housing Assistance is a Lifeline

Across the United States, we are facing a staggering shortage of more than 7.2 million affordable rental homes for extremely low-income households. For seniors, this isn't just a statistic; it's a daily struggle. As the percentage of older adults who rent is expected to climb to 23 percent by 2035, the need for dedicated senior housing assistance has never been more urgent.

When housing costs eat up the majority of a fixed income, something has to give. Research shows that seniors who are severely cost-burdened spend about 62 percent less on healthcare. They are forced to make impossible choices:

    • Do I pay the rent or buy my heart medication?
    • Do I keep the lights on or buy fresh, nutritious food?
    • Do I stay in the neighborhood I love, or move somewhere isolated just to afford a room?

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we view housing assistance as an act of advocacy. By providing stable housing, we are protecting the health and well-being of our community's most precious resource: our elders.

More Than a Building: The Health Benefits of Supportive Housing

Safe, affordable housing is the foundation of physical health. When seniors have access to integrated housing and healthcare services, the results are transformative. Residents in supportive housing communities often live longer, experience lower mortality rates, and are less likely to end up in the emergency room compared to those living in isolation.

Through programs like our telehealth services, we aim to bridge the gap between where a senior lives and the care they need. Integrated services mean:

    • ✓ Regular health monitoring to catch issues before they become crises.
    • ✓ Nutritional support to ensure bodies stay strong.
    • ✓ Reduced reliance on overextended family caregivers.
    • ✓ A safe environment that minimizes the risk of falls and injuries.

By removing the stress of housing instability, we allow the body and mind to focus on what matters: living a full, vibrant life.

    Fighting the Epidemic of Loneliness

If there is one thing that hurts our elders as much as physical illness, it is social isolation. Living alone without a support network can lead to profound depression and a decline in cognitive health. This is why "staying connected" isn't just a catchy phrase: it’s a medical necessity.

Senior housing communities create built-in opportunities for connection. Whether it's a shared meal in a common room or a organized group activity, these interactions provide the social "fuel" that seniors need to stay sharp and happy. At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we go a step further by integrating behavioral health and emotional wellness into everything we do. We believe mental health is just as important as physical health, especially for those who have spent a lifetime caring for others.

The Pelagie Difference: Dignity Through Salon Therapy and Wellness

One of the most unique ways we help our elders stay connected to their sense of self is through our focus on "Salon Therapy." It sounds simple, but the power of a haircut, a manicure, or a professional grooming session is immense. It’s about more than just looks; it’s about dignity.

Our Christ-Lee’s Hair Boutique is a cornerstone of this philosophy. For a senior woman who has faced domestic violence or a veteran transitioning to civilian life, these services offer a moment of peace and self-care that validates their worth. It’s a chance to talk, to be pampered, and to feel seen. This "salon therapy" serves as a bridge to other services, opening the door for behavioral health support in a casual, non-threatening environment.

    Preserving Community and Preventing Displacement

We often talk about "aging in place," but that becomes difficult when gentrification and rising costs push elders out of the neighborhoods they’ve lived in for decades. Staying connected means staying in the community you know: near your church, your favorite grocery store, and your longtime friends.

Efforts like the Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program are essential, but they are often underfunded. That’s where organizations like Pelagie Foundation Ltd step in. We work to ensure that seniors aren't displaced. We believe that keeping elders in their familiar environments provides a sense of continuity and stability that is vital for their mental health.

  • Supportive Housing Programs Matter: Why Stability is Key for Veterans and Seniors

Supportive Housing Programs Matter: Why Stability is Key for Veterans and Seniors

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we believe that home is more than just four walls and a roof. It is the foundation upon which every other part of life is built. When you don’t know where you’re going to sleep tonight, it’s nearly impossible to think about your long-term health, your career, or your mental well-being. This is a reality far too many of our neighbors face, particularly those who have served our country and those who have spent a lifetime building our communities.

For veterans and seniors, housing instability isn’t just a logistical problem; it’s a barrier to dignity, health, and peace of mind. That’s why supportive housing programs are at the very heart of what we do. We aren't just looking to provide a bed; we are looking to provide a "forever" sense of security.

    The True Cost of Instability

If you’ve ever felt the rug pulled out from under you, you know how hard it is to find your footing again. Now, imagine feeling that way while navigating the complexities of aging or the lingering effects of military service.

For many veterans, the transition from structured military life to civilian reality is jarring. The "soft landing" they were promised doesn't always materialize. Similarly, our seniors often find themselves on fixed incomes that haven't kept pace with rising rents, or they face physical limitations that make their current homes unsafe.

When stability is lost, health usually follows. Without a consistent place to live, managing chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension becomes a secondary concern to finding a meal and a safe place to rest. At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we’ve seen how transformative it is when we remove that primary stressor. When a person knows they are safe, they can finally start to heal.

Diverse Pelagie Foundation staff in a modern office, gathered around a table during a team meeting

Why Veterans Need More Than a "Thank You for Your Service"

We hear it all the time: "Thank you for your service." But gratitude doesn't pay the rent. Many veterans carry invisible wounds, PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, or the heavy weight of moral injury. These aren't things that a simple housing voucher can fix on its own.

Supportive housing programs like HUD-VASH (Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing) are game-changers because they combine rental assistance with clinical services. It’s a "Housing First" approach, but not "Housing Only." By providing a permanent home first, veterans have the physical space to engage with the VA for mental health treatment and substance use counseling.

We also look toward programs like Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF), which focus on rapid re-housing. The goal is simple: get veterans off the streets and back into a stable environment as quickly as possible. You can learn more about how we connect people to these resources on our Help Page.

Seniors: Dignity in the Golden Years

Our seniors are often the "forgotten" demographic in the housing crisis. Many are living in homes they can no longer maintain or are facing eviction due to predatory practices or skyrocketing costs. For a senior, losing a home often means losing their social circle, their primary care doctor, and their sense of self.

Stability for seniors means accessibility and community. It means having a home that is modified for their physical needs, something programs like the Special Home Adaptation (SHA) grants help with for disabled veterans, but which we believe should be a standard for all aging adults.

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we prioritize creating environments where seniors don't just exist, but thrive. This involves ensuring they have access to Telehealth services so they don't have to navigate difficult transportation hurdles just to see a doctor.

    The Pelagie Difference: Holistic Stability

Dr. Christ-Lee Lizaire-Ganthier founded this organization on the principle that support must be holistic. You can't treat a person in fragments. You have to look at the whole human being. This is why our Programs include more than just housing placement.

One of our unique approaches is Salon Therapy. It might sound unconventional to some, but for someone who has been living on the streets or in a shelter, the act of being cared for, getting a haircut, a shave, or a style, is a profound act of restoration. It’s about regaining the person you were before the crisis took over. Dr. Christ-Lee’s vision through Christlee's Hair Boutique integrates this sense of personal pride into the recovery journey.

    Behavioral Health: The Missing Link

Housing stability is the foundation, but behavioral health is the framework that keeps the house standing. Many of the individuals we serve through our Street Outreach are dealing with deep-seated trauma.

If we give someone an apartment but don't address the depression or anxiety that keeps them isolated, we haven't truly solved the problem. Stability requires an ongoing relationship with behavioral health professionals who understand the specific needs of underserved communities. We provide a welcoming, professional environment where people feel seen, not just processed.

A behavioral health professional sits in a modern office, attentively listening and providing guidance to a client during a counseling session

Key Benefits of Supportive Housing Programs

To truly understand why these programs matter, we have to look at the quantifiable impact they have on our community:

    • ✓ Reduced Emergency Room Visits: When people have stable homes and access to primary care, they don't wait until a health issue is a crisis to seek help.
    • ✓ Improved Mental Health Outcomes: Stability reduces the chronic stress of survival, allowing therapeutic interventions to actually take root.
    • ✓ Community Integration: Housing programs help veterans and seniors reconnect with their neighborhoods, reducing the dangerous effects of isolation.
    • ✓ Economic Efficiency: It is far more cost-effective for a community to provide supportive housing than to pay for the recurring costs of emergency shelters, jail stays, and ER visits.

How You Can Be Part of the Movement

We believe in the power of partnership. Whether you are a local business owner, a healthcare provider, or a concerned neighbor, there is a place for you in this mission. We are constantly looking for ways to expand our Partners and Affiliations to create a stronger safety net for those who need it most.

If you are a veteran or a senior facing housing instability, or if you know someone who is, please don’t wait. Reach out to us. We are here to listen, to validate your struggle, and to help you find the path back to stability.

You can contact us directly at 470-356-6285.

Our team is dedicated to proving that no matter how long you’ve been struggling, a better chapter is possible. We provide the tools, the housing, and the behavioral health support, but you provide the courage to take that first step.

    Final Thoughts

Supportive housing isn't a handout; it’s a hand up. It’s an acknowledgment that our veterans and seniors have already given so much to our society and that they deserve to live their lives with peace and security. Stability is the key that unlocks a person's potential to live a healthy, fulfilling life.

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we are honored to be the ones holding that key alongside you. Let’s work together to ensure that no veteran or senior in our community ever has to wonder where they will call home.

Ready to make a difference or need to find a way back home?

  • Can Primary Care Behavioral Health Really Help You Thrive? Find Out Here

Can Primary Care Behavioral Health Really Help You Thrive? Find Out Here

If you’ve ever felt like your doctor just doesn't "get" the whole picture of who you are, you aren't alone. Maybe you’ve gone in for a physical check-up but felt weighed down by stress, or perhaps you’ve visited a clinic for a chronic ache only to realize that your mental health was the real driver behind the pain. For too long, the medical world has treated the body and the mind as two separate entities living in two different buildings.

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we believe you deserve better. We believe that your mental well-being is just as vital as your physical health. That’s why we are so passionate about primary care behavioral health (PCBH). It’s not just a fancy medical term; it’s a revolutionary way of looking at healthcare that puts you: the whole you: at the center.

Breaking the Silo: What is Primary Care Behavioral Health?

Think of your typical doctor's visit. You wait, you get your vitals taken, you talk to the doctor for ten minutes, and you leave with a prescription or a referral. If you mention feeling depressed or anxious, you might get a slip of paper with a phone number for a therapist you have to call on your own.

Primary care behavioral health flips that script. In a PCBH model, a behavioral health consultant is right there in the office. They are part of your primary care team. If you’re struggling, your doctor doesn't just send you away; they introduce you to someone who can help right then and there.

We call this "integrated care," and it’s a game-changer for our community: especially for those who have been marginalized or dismissed by traditional systems. Whether you are searching for a domestic violence shelter for women or navigating the complexities of veteran transitional housing, having mental health support integrated into your basic care makes thriving possible.

    behavioral-health-professional-counseling-office.webp

    Why Integration Matters for You

Research shows that nearly 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health condition every year. Yet, nearly 67% of people with behavioral health disorders never get the treatment they need. Why? Because the system is too complicated, too expensive, or carries too much stigma.

Here is why we advocate for this model:

    • ✓ Faster Access: No more waiting months for a specialist. You get help the day you ask for it.
    • ✓ Reduced Stigma: Talking to a counselor in your doctor's office feels just like checking your blood pressure. It’s normal, healthy, and necessary.
    • ✓ Better Outcomes: When your mind is in a good place, your body heals faster. PCBH has been shown to improve chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
    • ✓ Holistic Care: We see you as a person, not a diagnosis. We look at your housing, your safety, and your heart.

If you are ready to see how this approach can change your life, reach out to us at 470-356-6285.

Empowering the Underserved: A Mission of Advocacy

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we don’t just provide services; we lead a movement. We are dedicated to serving BIPOC communities, immigrants, veterans, and women in ministry who have often been told their needs don't matter.

For a woman seeking domestic violence housing assistance, the trauma isn't just a side note: it’s the primary barrier to her stability. By integrating primary care behavioral health with our housing programs, we provide a safety net that catches the whole person. We prove the negative narratives wrong. You aren't "difficult" or "broken"; you are a survivor who deserves comprehensive support.

    Housing as Healthcare

It is nearly impossible to focus on your mental health when you don't know where you are going to sleep at night. This is why our services are intertwined. Pelagie Foundation Ltd provides:

    1. Veteran Transitional Housing: Supporting those who served our country by giving them a place to land and the mental health tools to move forward.
    2. Domestic Violence Shelter for Women: A safe haven where healing begins with both physical security and emotional counseling.
    3. Senior Housing Assistance: Helping our elders age with dignity, ensuring they aren't isolated or forgotten.

We believe that housing is a fundamental part of the behavioral health journey. When you have a door that locks and a bed that’s yours, your nervous system can finally start to regulate. You can find more about our specific programs here.

    The Magic of Salon Therapy

Now, let’s talk about something truly unique to Pelagie Foundation Ltd. We know that traditional clinical settings can sometimes feel cold or intimidating. That’s where salon therapy comes in.

There is a long-standing tradition, especially in minority communities, of the hair salon being a place of trust, confession, and community. Dr. Christ-Lee Lizaire-Ganthier recognized this power and integrated it into our mission. At Christ-Lee’s Hair Boutique, you aren't just getting a new look; you’re entering a therapeutic space.

Salon therapy bridges the gap between self-care and mental healthcare. It’s about "Look Good, Feel Good, Do Good." It’s an entry point for people who might be hesitant to sit in a traditional therapist's office but are happy to talk to a stylist who understands their culture and their struggles.

Bridging the Gap for Veterans and Seniors

Our veterans and seniors face unique challenges. Many veterans returning to civilian life struggle with PTSD or moral injury, and the transition can be jarring. Our veteran transitional housing isn't just about a room; it’s about a community that understands the sacrifice. By offering primary care behavioral health within these programs, we help veterans process their experiences in a way that is respectful and effective.

Similarly, our seniors often battle "the quiet epidemic" of loneliness. Through senior housing assistance, we ensure our elders are connected to peers and healthcare professionals who monitor both their physical vitals and their emotional spirits. No one should have to navigate their golden years alone or in fear.

    We Are Here to Help

If you're reading this and thinking, "I need this," don't hesitate. Whether you're looking for telehealth services or need help with affordable care act navigation, we have your back.

Our approach is built on warm professionalism. We are experts in our field, but we are humans first. We see the strength in your struggle and the potential in your future.

  • The Roots of Resilience: From Diplomatic Service to Community Care

The Roots of Resilience: From Diplomatic Service to Community Care

History has a funny way of showing us exactly where we come from just when we need that extra bit of inspiration. Here at the Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we’ve always known that our mission to serve Veterans, seniors, and the underserved was rooted in something deep. But recently, we took a little trip down the family tree, and what we found was nothing short of a "wow" moment. 🦋✨

It turns out that the spirit of leadership and service isn't just something we decided to do; it’s literally in the DNA. Let’s talk about a man named Raoul Lizaire and how a diplomat from 1928 paved the way for the housing and behavioral health services we provide today. 📜🎓

A Discovery in the Archives: Meet Raoul Lizaire

Imagine Washington, D.C., in the late 1920s. It was a time of massive transition, shifting global politics, and intense diplomatic maneuvering. In the middle of all this, on May 26, 1928, a man named Raoul Lizaire stepped into the spotlight as the Chargé d’Affaires for Haiti.

For those who aren’t history buffs (don’t worry, Penny has your back!), a Chargé d’Affaires is essentially the person in charge of a diplomatic mission when the ambassador is away. It’s a position of immense trust, high-level advocacy, and: most importantly: bridge-building. Raoul wasn’t just representing a government; he was representing his people to a foreign nation during a pivotal era that stretched into the 1930s.

He was the voice for the voiceless on a global stage. He had to navigate complex systems, negotiate for the welfare of others, and maintain a standard of excellence that commanded respect. Sound familiar? It should! That same spirit of advocacy is what drives Dr. Christ-Lee and the entire Pelagie Foundation team every single day. 🌸

The Connection to Pelagie Lissa Lizaire

Now, here is where it gets personal. We have reason to believe Raoul was closely related to the heart and soul of our organization: Pelagie Lissa Lizaire.

Grandma Pelagie Portrait Grandma Pelagie in a pink blouse with the foundation logo.

Pelagie is the namesake of this foundation, and her legacy of kindness and "Circle of Care" is the ground we walk on. If Raoul was the "diplomatic" branch of the tree, Pelagie was the "nurturing" roots. While Raoul was navigating the halls of power in D.C., the Lizaire family was cultivating a culture of community care that would eventually blossom into what we do now.

When we look at Grandma Pelagie, we don’t just see a face; we see a lineage of resilience. Whether it was through diplomatic cables in 1928 or serving meals and providing comfort in the decades that followed, the goal has always been the same: guarding the sacred. Just like the original chaplains who shared their cloaks with those in need, the Lizaire family has been sharing their "capes" of protection for nearly a century.

From Diplomatic Service to Modern Community Care

You might be wondering, "Penny, what does a diplomat from 1928 have to do with me getting housing or mental health support today?"

The answer is everything. Diplomacy is the art of connection. At the Pelagie Foundation, we act as modern-day diplomats for our Veterans and seniors. We navigate the "foreign" and often confusing territories of healthcare, government benefits, and housing markets so that you don't have to.

Our programs are designed to be that bridge:

    • Veteran Transitional Housing: For those who served our country, the transition back to civilian life should be handled with the same dignity Raoul brought to his diplomatic post.
    • Supportive Housing Programs: We provide a stable foundation so that individuals can focus on growth and transformation. 🦋
    • Primary Care Behavioral Health: We believe that mental wellness is the cornerstone of a successful life. Our telehealth services ensure that support is always within reach.

We aren't just a business; we are a movement dedicated to proving that your past: or your current struggles: do not define your future. We are here to validate your journey and advocate for your success. ✓

The Legacy of Resilience: Pierre Junior Lizaire and Beyond

We recently shared a post about the Legacy of Resilience involving Pierre Junior Lizaire, Pelagie’s son, and Kenan West. This wasn’t just a one-off story; it’s a continuation of the marathon Raoul started in 1928.

Pierre Junior Lizaire Portrait Pierre Junior Lizaire, Pelagie's son, in a blue shirt and tie

When we see the achievements of the family: the degrees earned, the communities built, and the lives saved: we see a "diploma" of life. 🎓📜 Every person who finds a home through our foundation, every Veteran who gets the behavioral health support they need, is a new blossom on the Lizaire family tree. 🌸

Why This Matters for Our Veterans and Seniors

To our Veterans: You have spent your lives being the shield for others. Now, it’s our turn to be the "Chargé d’Affaires" for your needs. We understand that the "affairs" of life: finding affordable housing, managing health, and finding community: can feel overwhelming.

We use a "Circle of Care" approach because we know that you can't fix one part of a life without looking at the whole. You deserve excellence. You deserve a partner who understands that service is a lifetime commitment, not a temporary job.

Residents and staff participate in a therapeutic gardening activity outdoors, wearing gloves and using tools together.

Join the Movement: Be Part of the Legacy

The Lizaire family has been in the business of serving people since before many of us were born. From the diplomatic offices of Washington to the streets where we conduct our outreach, the mission remains unchanged: Empowerment through compassion.

We invite you to be a part of this unfolding history. Whether you are a Veteran looking for a fresh start, a senior needing supportive care, or a community member who wants to partner with us, there is a place for you in our circle.

    • Looking for housing? Explore our programs.
    • Need to talk? Our behavioral health team is ready to listen.
    • Want to help? Let’s collaborate and make a difference together.

Raoul Lizaire stood tall in 1928 so that we could stand strong in 2026. Let’s keep that legacy of resilience growing. 🦋🌸

  • Never Too Late: A Graduation Story Rooted in Dignity and Hope

    🎓 📜

Some stories deserve to be told because they remind all of us what is still possible.

This is one of those stories.

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we believe people should never be counted out because of their age, their past, or the challenges they have faced. We believe dignity can be restored. We believe hope can be rebuilt. And we believe it is never too late to keep going.

That is why the graduation of 72-year-old Apostle Pierre Alix Lizaire and 22-year-old Kenan West means so much.

Apostle Pierre Alix Lizaire, the father of our owner, Dr. Christ-Lee Lizaire-Ganthier, and Kenan West, her son, recently reached a milestone together that speaks across generations. They graduated at the same time, each earning a college degree, each walking in the same season of achievement, and each showing in his own way that purpose does not expire.

There is something powerful about seeing a grandfather and grandson share a moment like that. One is 72. One is 22. Fifty years apart, but standing on common ground with caps, gowns, and hard-earned success. It is more than a family celebration. It is a living message to anyone who has ever wondered if they missed their chance.

    The answer is no.

A Story Bigger Than One Family

At 72, many people assume life should slow down. They assume major goals belong to younger people. They assume the season for learning, growing, and starting over has passed.

Apostle Pierre Alix Lizaire proves otherwise.

His journey reflects strength, discipline, and commitment. He did not stop because time passed. He kept moving. He kept believing. He kept working toward something meaningful. That matters.

Kenan West represents another side of the story. At 22, he carries the energy, promise, and drive of a new generation. Graduating alongside his grandfather makes this moment even more meaningful because it shows that determination is not limited by age. Excellence can be pursued early in life and later in life. Growth belongs to all of us.

Together, they tell a story of shared effort, shared vision, and shared victory.

The Meaning of “Never Too Late”

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, “Never Too Late” is not just a nice phrase. It reflects how we see people.

We serve veterans, women facing domestic violence, seniors, and other underserved individuals who may have been overlooked, underestimated, or told to settle for less. We believe their lives still hold value. We believe their next chapter still matters. We believe there is still room for healing, progress, and achievement.

That is why this graduation story fits so deeply with our mission.

When Apostle Pierre crossed that stage, it was not only about a degree. It was about dignity. It was about finishing something important. It was about showing that growth is still possible at 72.

When Kenan crossed that stage, it was not only about youth and promise. It was about legacy. It was about honoring the example in front of him while building a future of his own.

That is the kind of story that restores hope.

Restoring Dignity, One Milestone at a Time

We know that many people carry quiet dreams for years.

Some want to go back to school.
    Some want stable housing.
Some want support for their mental health.
Some want a safe place to begin again.
Some simply want someone to believe they are still capable.

    We believe those dreams matter.

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, our work is rooted in restoring dignity and hope through housing, primary care behavioral health, and salon therapy services. We do this because people deserve support that sees the whole person, not just the immediate problem. A safe place to live, emotional support, and confidence in how you show up in the world all play a part in helping people move forward.

This graduation milestone reminds us why that work matters.

Success does not happen in isolation. People rise when they are supported. People heal when they are seen. People move forward when someone makes space for them to believe in themselves again.

    A Personal and Community Victory

For Dr. Christ-Lee Lizaire-Ganthier, this moment is deeply personal. Watching her father and her son graduate together is the kind of memory that stays with a family forever.

But it also means something to the wider community.

For seniors, it says your goals still matter.

For young adults, it says your future is worth building with purpose.

For families, it says legacy is not only what you leave behind. It is also what you model in real time.

For anyone who has ever been discouraged, dismissed, or delayed, it says this clearly: your timeline is still valid.

    You are not behind.
    You are not finished.
You are not out of time.

Why This Story Belongs at Pelagie Foundation Ltd

This is the kind of story that reflects who we are.

We are here for people who need stability.
We are here for people who need care.
We are here for people who need hope.
We are here for people who need someone to remind them that their life still has direction and value.

Apostle Pierre Alix Lizaire and Kenan West did more than earn degrees. They gave our community a picture of perseverance. They showed what can happen when courage meets commitment. They proved that one family milestone can encourage countless other people to keep going.

    And that is worth celebrating.

    Your Next Chapter Still Matters

Maybe your goal is a degree.
    Maybe it is recovery.
    Maybe it is housing.
Maybe it is peace of mind.
Maybe it is simply starting again.

Wherever you are, we want you to remember this story.

At 72, Apostle Pierre kept going.
    At 22, Kenan kept building.
Together, they showed us that progress does not belong to one age group, one season, or one type of person.

It belongs to anyone willing to take the next step.

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we believe in that next step. We believe in second chances, fresh starts, and meaningful support. Most of all, we believe it is never too late for dignity, never too late for hope, and never too late to move forward.

If this story speaks to you, take that as your reminder.

    Keep going.
    Keep believing.
Your milestone may be closer than you think.

Community Impact Matters: How Veteran Transitional Housing is Changing Lives This Week

Hey there, everyone! It’s Dr. Christ-Lee Lizaire-Ganthier here. Welcome back to our weekly series where we take a deep dive into the hearts and homes of those we serve. At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we believe that housing is more than just a roof over someone’s head: it’s the foundation for a whole new life. This week, we’re focusing specifically on our veterans, but as always, our hearts are open to the women facing domestic violence, our cherished seniors, and anyone in our community struggling with behavioral health challenges.

Transitioning from military service to civilian life should be a time of celebration, but for too many of our heroes, it’s a time of uncertainty and instability. If you’ve ever been told that your skills don't translate or if you've felt like the system you fought for has turned its back on you, we are here to prove otherwise. We don’t just offer "services"; we offer advocacy, partnership, and a path forward.

Why Transitional Housing is the Missing Piece

When a veteran returns home, they aren't just looking for a bed. They are looking for a community that understands the unique weight they carry. Transitional housing acts as a crucial bridge. It’s a structured environment where veterans receive support in therapeutic communities while moving from military life to stable, permanent civilian housing.

Recent data from March 2026 shows that U.S. veterans are reaching the highest levels of permanent housing placement we’ve seen since 2019. That’s not an accident. It’s the result of targeted, compassionate programs that prioritize the human being behind the uniform. At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we see this progress every day in the faces of the people we serve.

Team members of Pelagie Foundation Ltd are collaboratively packing boxes with bottled water and essential supplies for a community giveaway, supporting those in need of housing, primary care, and emotional wellness services.

    Wraparound Services: The Pelagie Difference

We believe that housing without support is only half a solution. To truly change a life, you have to address the whole person. This is what we call "wraparound care." It’s not just a buzzword; it’s our mission in action.

Our programs are designed to cover every angle of a veteran's journey:

    • Career Services: Helping translate military expertise into civilian careers.
    • Case Management: Navigating the often-confusing world of benefits and legal requirements.
    • Mental Health Support: Providing a safe space to process trauma and transition stress.
    • Primary Care: Ensuring physical health is maintained through our integrated wellness models.

When veterans are offered this kind of long-term support, they don’t just find a house: they stabilize. Research shows measurable improvements in health, including better access to primary care and a significant reduction in substance use. You can learn more about how we structure these efforts on our Programs page.

Innovation Driving Change: Peer Support and Tiny Homes

The world is changing, and the way we fight homelessness needs to change with it. We are seeing some incredible innovations in the field right now that are making a world of difference.

    1. Peer Support Networks
One of the most powerful tools we have is the "peer navigator." These are veterans who have lived through housing instability themselves. They guide new residents through the application processes and lease agreements. It creates a mentorship cycle where those who have stabilized reach back to pull others up. It’s about veterans helping veterans, and there is nothing more powerful than that shared bond.

    2. Alternative Housing Models
Have you heard about the tiny home movement? It’s not just for HGTV! Tiny home villages: typically 300 to 400 square feet: are allowing for rapid construction on underused urban land. These homes provide the autonomy and privacy many veterans need while maintaining a tight-knit community structure. It’s a creative way to solve a complex problem quickly.

    The Impact by the Numbers

It’s important to look at the data to see that what we are doing is working. Between 2010 and 2024, dedicated veteran housing programs achieved a staggering 56 percent reduction in veteran homelessness across the country.

Closer to home, in Florida, veteran homelessness has been cut by approximately 70 percent since 2010. This was made possible through VA Supportive Services for Veteran Families grants and HUD VA Supportive Housing vouchers. While these numbers are encouraging, we know that as long as one veteran is sleeping on the street, our work isn't done. We are committed to being part of the movement that brings that number to zero.

Holistic Healing: Behavioral Health and Salon Therapy

At Pelagie Foundation Ltd, we are known for thinking outside the box. We know that feeling good on the outside can help you start to heal on the inside. This is why we integrate Salon Therapy into our wellness services. It’s about more than a haircut; it’s about dignity, self-care, and the therapeutic conversation that happens in that chair.

Our behavioral health services are the backbone of what we do. Whether it’s through in-person counseling or our Telehealth services, we make sure that mental health support is accessible and affordable. We serve BIPOC, immigrants, and underserved communities who have historically been sidelined by the traditional healthcare system.

    Supporting Women and Seniors

While this week's focus is on veterans, we cannot ignore the other pillars of our foundation. Women facing domestic violence need more than just a safe place to sleep; they need a community that validates their strength and helps them rebuild their independence. Our residential settings are designed to be warm and nurturing: a true sanctuary.

Similarly, our seniors deserve to age with grace and security. We provide housing assistance that respects their legacy and ensures they are not forgotten in their golden years. Whether it’s through therapeutic gardening or community social events, we keep our residents engaged and connected.
